When it comes to marketing your business, networking is an important part of getting your business’s name out there. You create contacts and meet new business people. However, it is a craft. There are certain rules and conduct you must follow. There are also mistakes you need to avoid, otherwise, people may want to avoid your business and possibly spread that around. So, this week’s marketing tip will focus on networking mistakes and how to avoid them.
- Just focusing on clients. Of course, you want to find new clients. However, don’t make that your main priority. Going to an event is about networking and making connections. Get to know people and build that relationship.
- Pass out as many business cards as you can to people. It’s not about seeing how many you can pass out, it’s about getting to know people, making those connections and getting their business card as well. You may find that you wish you hadn’t given your business card to a certain person. It’s all about building relationships when networking, not just the numbers.
- Don’t make it all about you. Don’t just jump into a conversation about what you can offer them. Listen to them and their business. Figure out ways how you both can be of service for each other.
- Give it 100% or nothing. If you’re so focused on making that sell, you’re definitely going to chase your prospective clients away. Talk about what you do offer, but never make assumptions that they need you. That’s definitely the fastest way you’re going to make them turn the other direction.
- As soon as you follow up, start selling with your A game. Again, start developing that relationship you started when you first met them. Talk to them, see how they’re doing since you first talked. Again, it’s all about that relationship.
If this marketing tip hasn’t said it enough, it will say it again. It’s all about starting your relationship off on the right foot. Of course, you want to sell to them. However, you’ll make them a long-term customer if you build that special relationship.
