Have you ever had a customer that’s come into your store looking for a special gift to cheer up a sick child, friend, or family member? A lot of people will go for a Get Well Soon card, a fruit basket, or a stuffed animal.
But at Giant Microbes, they want to take the idea of a stuffed toy gift a little bit further, into an educational territory.
The Story
Founded in 2002 by creator Drew Oliver, this Stamford, Connecticut company makes stuffed toy versions of the little microbes that are observed by scientists and medical professions underneath their microscopes.
The purpose of these stuffed microbe toys is to make illnesses and diseases seem a little less scary to sick children. By turning human pathogens and viruses into cute and cuddly stuffed toys, Giant Microbes gives comfort to children that might not understand what’s going on with their bodies when they’re sick.
These toys are based on actual shapes and sizes of microbes observed by electron micrographs, and each toy comes with a photomicrograph of the actual microbe to compare the toys to the reality. This makes them a great educational tool, as well.
The standard size for most microbe plushies is 5.7 inches tall, but they also have Gigantic Microbe plushies, which are about 24 inches tall and pillow-sized!
Cell Structure, Tiny Critters and More
They have a variety of categories of microbes to choose from, and it’s not just viruses they offer. Customers will also be delighted to find an assortment of cell structures, tiny organisms, and more!
For those who teach health and sex education in schools, they even have microbes of venereal diseases (HIV, Herpes) and maladies (Ebola, Anthrax). These microbes are great for giving students a visual association for the way certain microbes appear in the body.
There are also little critters, like dust mites, fleas, ticks, and ants, for customers looking to add these to a plushie collection. They’re even great office decorations for those in the pest control industry!
Giant Microbes makes a unique product that you can’t find anywhere else. Stock your shelves with these cute plush toys, that are both fun to own and educational!
