If you go to Marge Margulies Pottery’s website, you almost need to start with the functional centerpieces page. All of her work is, without a doubt, aesthetically pleasing, well-crafted and touched with mellow yet cheerful hues, but her centerpieces are truly one of a kind; you’re not likely to find them anywhere else. One, fittingly called “Eclipse,” is a centerpiece composed of five deep dish charger plates each cut to resemble a phase of the moon and is meant to be displayed off center. Another has been made to create a sense of looking at the tops of waves at eye level, and another was inspired by topographical maps. To sum up her work in two words, and as she says of one set: “Useful and beautiful!”
Marge, an artist based in California, has more than 30 years in the business and creates pieces that you will want to have in your home for the rest of your life; they are timeless and of such craftsmanship, that you can guarantee they will last forever.
Marge has had her hands in clay since handprints in plaster were assigned in her kindergarten class, then through an apprenticeship with master potters, and all the way to a degree in ceramics from the Philadelphia College of Art. Her ideas took form as she watched her parents choose their mid-century modern furnishings with great care, and she began to develop an affinity for that design aesthetic which holds true to this day. Through many twists and turns showing her works at fairs, shops, and galleries, she has built her business with care and perseverance, starting with a couple small orders. For more than 30 years, customers who love bright, lively color, and stylish, functional ceramics have discovered and bought her work at more than 200 stores all across the country. The buyers she has dealt with know her as reliable and consistent and know to expect new ideas and an ease of ordering that produces results.
Not to be missed, however, are the many other offerings, such as the stylishly glazed Server Set with matching dipperette (perfect for serving appetizers). These sets feature a large plate (either 14″ wide and 18″ wide) with a coordinating dipperette.
Several pitchers are available in those pretty blue, green, yellow and orange colors in a range of styles and sizes.
They even offer a coordinating set for the dining table (different colors that work in harmony) that includes a dinner plate, salad/dessert plate, bread plate, bowl, ice cream bowl, mug, and cup with saucer. Of course, individual pieces, such as bowls, mugs, plates and a gorgeous harmonium vase, can all be purchased separately.
To take some of this beauty outside, consider getting a plant basket, a perfect home for your customer’s plants in a container that’s going to enhance whatever grows inside.
All of her work is hand thrown, lightweight, lead-free, and dishwasher safe, so you can be sure your customers are getting quality and practicality in these pieces that can only be considered art.
